About Me

Oceana Cato
I began playing the fiddle at age 3 while growing up in Duncan, British Columbia, Canada. I have played at music and performing arts festivals around Duncan and Victoria ever since. I started taking lessons with Calvin Cairns at age 4. I then studied with Daniel Lapp, Carlisle Wilson, Steven DeVries, and Garth Wilson, who each individually influenced my fiddling differently. Both Carlisle Wilson and Steven DeVries trained me classically in the Cowichan Valley. Calvin Cairns and Daniel Lapp both perform and teach and have fiddle groups in Victoria BC. I I have played in various groups including Daniel Lapp’s British Columbia Fiddle Orchestra, and Calvin Cairns Conservatory Fiddlers. I fiddled for the Cowichan Valleys Premier celtic band Jane's Way for four years. In 2008 the Victoria Fiddlers Association had an Exchange with the Cape Breton Fiddlers and we switched homes for a week to perform and learn each others music. I fell in love with Cape Breton music, it became my inspiration and its all I have played since. I spent a semester of my tenth grade year living in Cape Breton Nova Scotia immersed in Cape Breton fiddling, studying with Glenn Graham and Jennifer Roland. When I returned I began teaching. I had private students, a group of intermediates, and worked for Duncan Music teaching all ages from December 2010 to September 2011. I studied Performance and Music Business at Berklee College of Music in Boston and took private lessons with Jason Anick and Darol Angor until May 2012. I then spent time in Dublin, Ireland playing at pubs and busking. I am now living in Boston and looking for new students!
